This competition, sponsored by Chamber Music in Yellow Springs

and to encourage exploration of new or lesser-known repertoire.
Past winners include string quartets (Aeolus, Jasper, Attaca, Shanghai, Amernet, and Corigliano), piano trios (Manhatten, David, and Guild), wind ensembles (Intrada Winds, Amstel Saxophone Quartet, and Chamber Brass of Boston), and mixed ensembles (enhake, North Coast Trio, and Elm City Ensemble).

How to Enter
The competition is open to balanced ensembles of 3 to 6 players
(not soloists with accompaniment) whose average age must not
exceed 30 years. No more than one member of the ensemble may
have performed previously in a concert sponsored by CMYS. Entries
typically include string quartets, piano trios, wind and brass
quintets, and mixed ensembles of winds, strings, and piano. Finalists
are usually groups that have worked together for several years,
have completed graduate degrees, and are in residency positions
with sustained commitment to furthering the growth of the ensemble.

Entry Requirements
Please submit a clearly labeled, 40- to 60- minute DVD demonstrating
the breadth of your ensemble’s repertoire, balancing unusual
or avant-garde repertoire with contrasting classical styles.
We greatly prefer recordings of live performance, but studio
recordings are acceptable if they are played straight through,
movement by movement, and are not enhanced by digital editing. The DVD must be received by Chamber Music in Yellow Springs no later than January 31, 2013.
Note: CD, DAT or cassette tapes, videos, and minidisks will not be
accepted.
If your ensemble’s repertoire permits, please include at least
one movement drawn from the “standard” literature. Please avoid
show tunes, pops, and synthesized electronics. Every member of
your ensemble should play in each piece on your recording, and
no performance should include players who are not regular members
of your ensemble.
Please provide brief biographical information for each individual
and the group as a whole, including the following information:
• Educational background of each individual
• The ages of each member of the ensemble as of January 31, 2013
• How long the group has worked together
• Performance experience
• Outreach experience
• Experience with commissions and new works
• Other activities in which you have participated as an ensemble
• A list of the repertoire submitted on your DVD, the place and
date of each performance, and the name of the recording engineer,
if possible.
Your application materials must include a nonrefundable check
for $35, payable to Chamber Music Yellow Springs, as entry fee.
Note: Submissions are not returned.

Finalists
In the finals, each of the two selected ensembles will play 40 to 50 minutes of music
of its own choosing. The judges will award first and second prizes
at the conclusion of the performances. An informal reception,
dinner, and opportunity to network follow. Local public radio
stations may broadcast the competition performances.
Those selected as finalists will be notified by March 1, 2013.
They must confirm promptly, in writing, their commitment to appear
in Yellow Springs on Sunday, April 28, 2013. We will need to receive finalists’
publicity material and program information by March 30, 2013.
Finalists must make their own travel arrangements. CMYS will arrange
accommodations in private homes for the weekend. CMYS can provide
a grand piano; otherwise, instruments are the responsibility
of the performers. Foreign artists must be aware of U.S. Immigration Procedures and Tax Requirements. A useful website is www.artistsfromabroad.org.

two finalists and several alternates. The finalists will each
perform a 40- to 50-minute program on the evening of April 28, 2013, in
Yellow Springs, Ohio, to three judges and a warm and appreciative
audience. The judges for the finals, all distinguished and respected
musicians, will be named after the finalists are chosen.
